Website and Image Viewing Using the America
Online Browser
If you are
using the America Online built-in browser, you
may NOT be seeing the most recent updates to
this website and you may be seeing distorted
photo images. It depends on how you have your
preferences set. AOL's browser is not a true
browser. It does not refresh itself each time
you use it. The only way to guarantee that you
are seeing the most recent updates and the best
quality photos is to use an outside browser such
as INTERNET EXPLORER.
AOL also has a default option to over compress
the graphics on AOL before they transmit them to
you. This over compression can allow images to
download and display faster; however it will
severely distort many images and graphics on all
websites you visit.

From AOL, September 15, 1998
When
the AOL caching system detects that
an object is an image, it
sends the image through a
compression manager on the AOL
system
network before caching it.
Compression makes images smaller for
faster retrieval from the cache to
members.
In
addition, some images that are wider
than 640 pixels will be resized and
reduced to a width of 640 pixels
after being compressed ... This is a
limitation
of the compression software that is
used for compressing photo images.

To fix the over compression of photos and
graphics on the websites you visit,
look at the top of your AOL browser and click on
the SETTINGS button, then click
on
PREFERENCES,
and then click on INTERNET
PROPERTIES (WWW)
In the new window that opens, click on the
WEB GRAPHICS
tab and select
NEVER
COMPRESS GRAPHICS
A problem with the AOL browser is that it will
NOT reload the graphics once you have viewed
them
with compressed mode on. Once you have viewed an
image in compressed mode, it stays on your disk
until it ages out of the disk cache (replaced by
newer content) or until you clear your cache.
To clear the browser of old information and
graphics, select the SETTINGS
button, then click on
PREFERENCES,
and then click on INTERNET
PROPERTIES (WWW)
and click on the
GENERAL tab. You want to first
click on the DELETE FILES
button under Temporary Internet Files. Then
under History, click on the click on the
CLEAR HISTORY button, and finally click
on OK. The BEST solution is to
ALWAYS use another browser outside of AOL.
Once this has been
done you
will always see the most current updates and the
best graphics and photos.

EXPLORER
and download it. You can use it
as your main browser as long as you are logged
into AOL (if AOL is how you connect to the
internet. Just minimize the AOL window and
launch INTERNET EXPLORER).
